HOW IT ALL BEGAN
Our Story
Our journey as parents and professionals has been deeply personal and transformative. As seasoned Occupational Therapists with over two decades of experience, my wife Thet and I were overjoyed when we welcomed our second son, Mars Sebastian, into the world.
Like any parents, we were excited about his future. But as time passed, we noticed subtle signs that something was different. Mars wasn’t crawling properly, he wasn’t pointing or communicating as expected.
At first, we held onto hope, believing these signs might fade, but by the time Mars turned two, it became undeniable—our son was on the Autism Spectrum (ASD).

The realization was overwhelming. The thought of Mars struggling to cope in life, facing the challenges of school and social interaction, filled us with worry. It’s a fear that many parents of children with special needs know all too well.
This turning point led us to create Special Learners, an Early Intervention and School Readiness Program born from our professional expertise and our deep love as parents.
We designed a program that truly understands and embraces each child’s unique way of being. The word spread quickly within the special needs community, and soon, other families began to trust us with their children’s journeys.
At Special Learners, we are committed to fostering growth, development, and joy. We empower our students—whether through words or gestures—to ask questions, challenge norms, and explore the world around them in their own special way. Today, we are incredibly proud of Mars and the other children in our program. Many are now thriving in regular schools, both in Singapore and the Philippines. They are opening up, making friends, and gradually integrating into the broader community.
What once was a source of deep worry has now become our greatest hope and inspiration. We’ve learned that every child has their own unique path to learning, and with the right support, they can achieve incredible things.
This belief drives us every day, and it’s the heart of Special Learners.
